Dallas Area Fiber Artists

Advancing Public Awareness of Fiber Art as Fine Art

Dallas Area Fiber Artists members have the opportunity each year to participate in our annual, juried fiber show. The shows cover a variety of mediums, including mixed media, wearable art, felting, paper and many more.

IT'S A WRAP!

Results of the 2023 FUNtastic Fiber Exhibition

The 2023 annual members’ show, FUNtastic Fiber, took place this July and August.  Its goal was to honor our 53 years as an artistic community in helping fiber take its rightful place within the fine arts. Entrants submitted work that explored new materials and techniques, showing innovation and creativity in both the design and construction of their fiber art pieces.

The exhibition showcased the professional level of artistic design and mastery of materials, and was juried by Sue Benner.  Held at CC Young's The Point, FUNtastic Fiber educated the public about the diversity of the many fiber media used by our members.

Our member challenge, Golden Opportunities, was also held during this time.  This challenge required entrants to create a fiber artwork using a kit of gold-themed supplies that was supplied at prior meetings.  Our members showcased many diverse approaches to this challenge and showed exceptional creative expression and interpretation while celebrating the color gold within their art.

We are pleased to announce the following award winners.

    About the Juror: Sue Benner

We were honored to have Dallas art quilter Sue Benner jury our 2023 Annual Exhibit!

Born into a creative, Do-It-Yourself Wisconsin family, Sue Benner grew up with a love of nature and the desire to make things with her hands. Her mother taught her to sew while her father taught her about art, drawing, and painting. While earning her undergraduate degree in molecular biology and master’s in biomedical illustration, Sue Benner began to combine her study of science, the drive to make art, and her skills in sewing to make expressive works with textiles. A studio artist since 1980, she has exhibited her work throughout the United States and around the world, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, and three US Embassies.

Her textile constructions and quilts are in many private, corporate, and institutional collections including the International Quilt Museum, National Quilt Museum, BNSF Railway Collection, Golden State Warriors Chase Center Collection, and Green Bay Packers Collection. Benner is also an educator, lecturing and teaching workshops internationally in the areas of surface design, quilted textile collage, and artistic inspiration.

Benner lives in Dallas, Texas, with her husband, Craig Jett, and works in her backyard custom-built studio.

She is a devoted walker, exploring and photographing nearby White Rock Lake Park in its many moods. She

is the author of Walking Near Water: An Artist’s View of White Rock Lake, featuring 150 of her photographs
